Corten steel garden beds have become one of the most sought-after landscape features on the Gold Coast. We explain why they work so well, what they cost, and how AP Constructions installs them.
Corten steel — also known as weathering steel — has become one of the defining materials of contemporary landscape design on the Gold Coast. Its rich, rust-toned patina develops naturally over time and creates a striking contrast against green planting and natural stone.
What is Corten Steel? Corten steel is a high-strength steel alloy that forms a stable, protective oxide layer when exposed to the elements. This "rust" layer is not corrosion — it's a self-protecting surface that prevents further deterioration. Once the patina stabilises (usually within 12–18 months), corten steel requires virtually no maintenance.
Why Corten Works So Well in Gold Coast Landscapes The warm, earthy tones of corten steel complement the Gold Coast's natural palette beautifully — sandstone, native grasses, olive trees, and lush subtropical planting all work harmoniously with the material. It's also extremely durable in the subtropical climate.
Design Applications At AP Constructions, we use corten steel for garden bed edging, raised planter boxes, retaining wall cladding, feature walls, and water features. The material is highly versatile and can be cut and formed into virtually any shape.
Cost Corten steel garden beds typically range from $800–$3,000 depending on size and complexity. Custom-fabricated corten planters and feature walls are quoted individually. The material cost is higher than timber or concrete, but the longevity and aesthetic quality make it excellent value.
Installation Proper installation is critical. Corten steel must be set on a stable base, and drainage must be considered to prevent waterlogging. During the initial weathering period, the runoff from corten steel can stain surrounding surfaces — we always plan for this in our designs.
